Support the Games that you like or you won’t get new Indie Titles soon!

That’s true. All of my savings are in my game. This is not an amount like with Cuphead,
but to me, this is all of my wealth. I’ve put extreme nights into the game. Sometimes I didn’t sleep for days (!) just to make everything fine on the release day that is today on October 12th, 2017.

Pirates don’t care about the struggle of indie devs. But if the climate won’t change soon, you won’t get indie games like Computer Tycoon in the future. Because of that, I made a simple plan and a simple message for people pirating my game. Something that people will easily understand.

Influencers can put pictures onto the floppy disc in the main menu of the game. Something like this:

And I uploaded the game myself to piratebay.. This is my plan in three pictures:

Pirates could download the game in 1-2 days anyway. But now at least they will get a virus free version and I will have a message for them to consider. After seeing the message for 50 seconds they can continue playing. Who knows, if the press will like this, maybe I will hit stronger than the Game Dev Tycoon!

I will update this post about the download statistics of the PirateBay Version. But please people, support me and BUY it if you like it at least. Still, it is much better than with the cinema, where you don’t know what will you buy, right? I count on you, thank you!

UPDATE: October 14th,2017 – The first Conversion!

I’m also poor. Really. I barely can pay my rent, I don’t have a car, I have only my PC, software and instruments such as guitars and a big midi keyboard. That’s it after 10 years of work as an IT specialist. Am I rich then, or is it okay to steal from me? We can always have excuses when we do something wrong,- it’s easier than saying: I’m sorry.

I’m really afraid of financial failure.

But at least this guy did the right thing eventually! Or maybe it was way too frustrating to watch a “Commandore” screen after every 100 days in the game? Who knows, but I hope more will do the same.
At this moment the game was bought by 803 people. The torrent version (and I already found multiple other pirated versions as well – of the game isn’t online for 48 hours), but it must have thousands of users, what could change my life and give birth for more games.

I’d love to hear some reactions about that.

UPDATE: October 15th,2017 – The usual bad numbers.

3 days after the release we really have now “clear pirate” versions and from the statistics I can clearly see thousands of downloaders – meanwhile the game just reached the 1000 copies mark.
I guess from now on it will be very hard to fight against this.

Computer Tycoon is the first game about Computer Evolution, could be called the “Steve Jobs Simulator”. I offered the game’s trailer in his memory on October 5th on the 6th anniversary of his passing.

Check out the trailer and the game, or… even buy it here:

THANKS!

  1. Here’s the thing and you’re looking at this all wrong and many developers do the same thing. However being that you’re Indie the sting feels worst then it really is. Pirating has always been, and will always be. And before you go Oh great he’s another whack job… I’m personally against pirating, for the simple fact of I have the means (thankfully) to purchase the things that I want, and the things I can’t I simply wait until I do have those means.

Pirating exists because of the Crackers (reverse engineers), the main guys doing the heavy lifting, they do it for the recognition of their peers and the masses of being the first to do something (Beat a extremely hard protection scheme, release a game first to the scene, or just to be recognized as jackasses and havoc reapers). Many of the people that download these games/applications do so because it’s not available in their country, they don’t have expendable funds to purchase things, or just like collecting illicit softwares. They aren’t doing it to hurt you, they aren’t out to intentionally make you miss out on your car payment/mortgage…etc. They do it because they can and only that.

A majority of these people were never going to be customers in the first place. And a small subset of the people that would do in fact legitimately purchase the game later on if they like the game.

The problem, especially here recently is that AAA games in particular have become a watered down mess of cash grabs, and also now being that game engines are free to get into or low cost Indie developers have come onto the scene en-mass. And within that Alpha/Beta isn’t a thing anymore it’s now “Early Access” which the well intentioned purpose of it, helping support the developers and getting to test the games during development, has become corrupted by greedy indie developers leaving a bad taste in the end-user’s mouth. Since after backing many early access games the developer’s just close up shop and take the money with them.

So customer loyalties and trust are now at an all-time low. There is no right or wrong answer here and there isn’t going to be a quick fix. The damage has been done on both sides, and unless the entire industry changes things won’t get much better. Both the Pirates and your peers are to blame in all this.

  2. I’m not condoning piracy but I’m old enough to remember demos for even the most “Indie” of games. You may not change a prate’s mind but you may have more sales if you provided a demo of your game for people to try. That’s why I bought a lot of games way back when.

  3. I’m fascinated by the early days of the computer and video game industries. I read several books and watched a few documentaries. Ever since I played Game Dev Tycoon I got this idea of creating a game which would let you (re)live that time. But I’m not really a game developer and I never went beyond some very preliminary brain-storming.

And today I ran across an article in the Linux Game Consortium about your game and it looks amazing! The article mentions that you are considering a Linux version and I thought I’d wait for it before I buy, because I want more games on Linux 🙂

But after reading this post I decided to buy today. Please count it as a Linux sell 🙂

Keep it up and good luck.
